Five Guys Secret Menu: 7 Things You’re Going to Want to Try

Ordering off the Five Guys secret menu lets you get a little more creative with your favorite fast-food chain. Here's what to ask for (and what to skip) next time you go.

Foodies are always sharing their Five Guys secret menu item tips. For example, the secret cheese fries became so popular that Five Guys employees now refuse to make it. Plenty of other fast-food establishments have not-so-secret menu items too, like In-N-Out with its animal-style fries or the Waffle House Waffle Sandwich.

Those “secret” menu items usually involve extra work for the employees or some creative assembly on your end. Take, for example, The Land, Sea and Air at McDonald’s, which requires customers to order a burger, Filet-o-Fish and McChicken to put together. At a place like Five Guys, it’s the same thing. While many Five Guys employees have secrets, these often-requested menu items don’t seem to be one of them anymore!

I made a trip to my local Five Guys and ordered all of the secret menu items so you don’t have to. I found a few that are definitely worth ordering again, a few that slightly missed the mark, and some that are great for people with dietary restrictions. Here’s how to ask for them if you’re in the mood for changing up your order.

Patty Melt

Out of all the secret menu items at Five Guys, the patty melt is probably the easiest one to order—mostly because this item isn’t that much of a secret. Even though it might not be listed at your location, the patty melt is on the Five Guys website. It’s a grilled cheese with a burger patty in between, a great alternative to a cheeseburger.

Personally, I love when the ratio is more cheese than burger, so I thoroughly enjoyed this secret menu item. While the cheeseburger usually only has one slice, the patty melt has two, with a slice of cheese on top and bottom. It’s melty and toasty and the perfect alternative to a big Five Guys hamburger.

Grilled Cheeseburger

Grilled cheese fans are going to love this one. The grilled cheeseburger includes two beef patties in between two grilled cheese sandwiches. Essentially, the grilled cheese sandwiches serve as the buns. To order it, you have to ask for two grilled cheeses and two plain Little Burgers. Then, discard the extra buns and place those patties in between the grilled cheeses.

I hate to admit it, but I thought this secret menu item was overkill. After one bite, I gave up. I’d prefer a patty melt (or two!) if I’m that hungry. It’s way less work for the same amount of food.

Grilled Cheese Dog

Grilled Dog

This was probably the most surprising Five Guys secret menu item for me. To make it, order a grilled hot dog with nothing on it and a grilled cheese sandwich. While some would eat the grilled hot dog on top, you could also place the hot dog inside the grilled cheese to make it easier to eat.

It’s certainly a tasty option, though ordering a cheese dog seems like it would get pretty similar results without the assembly and food waste. The only difference is that a cheese dog is on a hot dog bun.

Burger Bowl

I love that the burger bowl is an option for people who are gluten-free or people who eat a lower-carb diet. Because I don’t have dietary restrictions, I would probably just stick with a burger next time.

To get it, all you have to do is order a burger in a bowl without the bun, and be sure to ask for all the toppings—otherwise they won’t add the lettuce or pickles in there. Also, ask for a cheeseburger and not a plain burger patty. Without the bun or the cheese, this burger bowl lacks taste. Adding bacon would really give it an upgrade!

Extra Crispy Fries

Extra crispy fries are as they seem; you simply order fries and ask for them well done. Although this is a secret menu item that is well known across the Internet, many Five Guys locations are starting to reject this request from customers—simply because it takes more time to get food out. If you get turned down when you request these, worry not. I think Five Guys serves some of the best fast-food fries across the industry, and they are already fresh and crispy when you order them.

Vegetarian Blt

Vegetarian BLT

Five Guys has a few vegetarian sandwich options. You can order the grilled cheese as well as the veggie sandwich with grilled onions, mushrooms and green peppers (with the option to add cheese). However, if you’re not totally into those, you could order a BLT sandwich and ask to hold the bacon. Then, request grilled mushrooms as a swap for the bacon.

While the BLT does add another vegetarian-friendly choice, it didn’t have as many veggies as I would like. There are more on the veggie sandwich, so keep that in mind if you’re hungry! Also, note that the BLT is not vegan-friendly since the buns are slathered in mayonnaise.

Extra Chunky Peanut Butter Shake

If I went to Five Guys with the intention of ordering secret menu items only, it would be the patty melt paired with the extra chunky peanut butter shake. I’m not sure how, but this milkshake stole my heart. It’s the typical Five Guys milkshake with added peanut butter, chocolate and bacon. Peel some of those peanuts so you can mix them in when your milkshake is ready. It’s a salty sweet delight; it has a great taste with lots of delicious crunchy bits. You’re going to want a spoon to scoop out the bacon and peanuts at the bottom!
