Infused with richly flavored browned butter, these chocolate chip cookies are chewy and soft just the way they should be. I think they’re the very best cookies you’ll ever eat. You can even make them without a mixer. —Grace Vallo, Salem, New Hampshire

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • Sea salt, optional

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°. In a small heavy saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Heat 5-7 minutes or until golden brown, stirring constantly. Transfer to a large mixing bowl. Let cool 10 minutes.
  2. Beat brown sugar, sugar and browned butter in a large bowl until blended. Beat in eggs and vanilla. In another bowl, whisk flour, salt, baking soda and baking powder; gradually beat into creamed mixture. Stir in chocolate chips. Drop dough by tablespoonfuls 2 in. apart onto greased baking sheets.
  3. Bake until set and edges begin to brown, 10-12 minutes. Cool on pans 5 minutes. If desired, sprinkle with sea salt. Remove to wire racks to cool.
