  • Black beans: Drain the beans thoroughly before using.
  • Bread crumbs: We recommend using panko bread crumbs since they’re lighter and crunchier.
  • Egg: Egg is the binding agent here so ensure it’s at room temperature before using.
  • Onion and garlic: No need to saute the onion and garlic before adding them to the patties; just make sure they’re finely chopped.
  • Seasonings: A bit of salt, pepper and cumin does the trick nicely.
  • Canola oil: Brush the patties with oil before searing them to avoid sticking.
  • Hamburger buns: We prefer to toast the buns. This process can be done either in the oven, stovetop or in the toaster.
  • (Optional) Toppings: Lettuce leaves, tomato slices, sliced pickles, ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise are all good topping options. Feel free to add the sliced cheese of your choice, too (top the burgers with cheese as soon as you flip them so the cheese gets melty.)

Directions

Step 1: Make the patty mixture

In a large bowl, combine the black beans, onion, garlic, salt and pepper. Use a potato masher to blend the ingredients (alternatively, you could use a food processor to do this). Add the egg and then the panko.

Step 2: Form the patties

Form the mixture into six evenly sized patties.

Step 3: Cook and serve the burgers

Lightly brush a skillet (ideally cast iron) with oil and heat it over medium heat. Cook the burgers for about four to five minutes on each side, until charred. Serve on buns with your favorite fixings.

Editor’s Tip: Let the patties cool a bit before serving them, as they tend to hold their shape better this way.

Black Bean Burger Recipe Variations

  • Add veggies: We like adding finely chopped bell pepper or porcini mushrooms to the patties.
  • Use different seasonings: Feel free to get creative with the spices and seasonings here. Smoked paprika and soy sauce are both delicious in these burgers.

How to Store Black Bean Burgers

Store any leftover patties in a tightly sealed container in the fridge for up to three or four days.

Can you freeze black bean burger patties?

Absolutely. These black bean patties freeze well and stay good for up to two months as long as they’re stored properly. To do so, freeze the patties on a baking sheet for a few hours (or overnight), then transfer them to a freezer-safe storage container.

I always pull out this recipe when craving a black bean burger. I love how simple it is and how easily it can be dressed up with other ingredients! When cooking the patties, I like to place a slice of gouda on the patty for the final minute to get that perfect gooey texture. —Heather Karow, Burnett, Wisconsin
